Memorial Day Madness Cartoons - 29 May 2010

*** Memorial Day sentiments from national editorial cartoonists.

From Denny: The one day of the year set aside for the official remembering of our war dead from all the country's wars brings up a lot of memories for families. Everyone has a relative, a spouse, a neighbor, a friend lost to war.

It seems our civilian governments cannot always get their proverbial acts together in every generation. In almost every generation, about every 20 years, we send off our young men and women to fight a war that could have been prevented if our government leaders of the time had any wisdom in their negotiations. The nation's warriors have born the brunt of bad government decisions one after the other which only makes their ultimate sacrifice that much harder to bear.

I've stood on the ground of military graves from the Civil War to the Vietnam and Iraq Wars and the sadness is always the same. You can practically reach out and touch the life not long lived as there is such a mourning in those places.

This Memorial Day while you are running around busy on vacation, grilling in your back yard for family and guests, please take some time to lift your glasses to those who went before us to safeguard our sometimes frivolous way of life. These men and women deserve at least a little of our time more than once a year. Take time to remember them, who they were, what they did, and, most of all, how they lived.

Check It Out: Rolling Stones Mag Names 5 Best Songs Ever

*** Rolling Stone Magazines choice for the 5 Best Songs of All Time with music videos.

From Denny: I just spent a couple of hours running down some great music video of the Rolling Stones Magazine's choices for the 5 Best Songs Of All Time. They are putting out a special collector's issue tomorrow that has the best 500 songs of all time. Most of it is grounded in the 60's and 70's but some also in the 2000s decade.

I parked this special post over at Dennys Art Sanctuary where some history of the making of the songs is discussed:

Political Cartoons: Memorial Day - 22 May 2010

From Denny: Every year in America we take time to do more than get a few days off to relax and grill hamburgers and hotdogs in our peaceful back yards with family and friends. We take time to remember our fallen war dead of all the generations and thank them for their ultimate sacrifice.

No matter what our political party affiliation everyone respects courage and sacrifice. Where we differ is sending our youngest and best into situations that could have been avoided had our civilian leaders had more courage and wisdom. Rash decisions are never the way of the wise and too often self-important egos of old men who won't park their pride at the door end up sending the a country's young men to war.

Recently, when I was checking on some genealogy research locally I went to the National Cemetery in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. There I found soldiers from the Massachusetts Brigade of the Civil War with a huge monument to them, WW2, Korean War to the Vietnam War. It was a strange place of white crosses all neat in a row. The Civil War names were fading from time and the weather. This place did not seem to contain the lingering sadness I had felt at a Confederate grave site where most of the graves were of fourteen year old boys.

During the Bush years, President Bush refused to allow photos of the war dead returning home. He knew public sentiment would turn against the Iraq War as well it did when finally photos of flag draped coffins on a military plane were smuggled out by a relative to the press.

War should never be fought anonymously but face to face so you can see the terror in each other's eyes and then maybe common sense of self-preservation will prevail. War should never be marketed in an antiseptic way like during the Bush years, deflecting from the harsh cruelty of it. Too many wives are left without husbands; too many children are left without parents.

It takes a generation for a country to heal. Let's quit putting in office the war mongers that feed the Big Business appetite of war profiteering off the blood of our soldiers. Greed brings too much sorrow - to everyone in their path of destruction.

From Denny: This sure has been quite the week with the drama unfolding out in the Gulf of Mexico with the BP oil spill off my Louisiana coast. The cartoonists have had great fun lampooning the various lies and finger pointing from the CEOs involved. The better news is that BP is finally making a bit of headway on corralling some of the oil for clean up, siphoning it into a tanker.

Some headway is better than nothing and at least it has slowed down the rate of gushing oil and natural gas for the moment. Definitely better than using an atomic bomb to blow up the well like the crazy Russians suggested. There's a plan. Nuke the Gulf of Mexico and irradiate the ocean waters for the next thousand years. Fortunately, BP and the government are contemplating lesser crazy options.

As a result of the oil spill there are countless great political cartoons and funny videos by the likes of Colbert to enjoy. And Betty White was the toast of late night TV on SNL after turning in some hilarious performances. She then proceeded to go out all night carousing with the SNL cast after the show. She's almost 89 years old and there's no time to waste for having fun! :)

Supreme Court Nominee Political Cartoons - 15 May 2010

From Denny: Leave it to the Republicans to fuss about what they can't find to throw dirt onto Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan. They complain there is no controversial paper trail. Read that as she was smart in not openly talking about anything that could hurt her career down the road. Point up on the board for Kagan, zero for the Republicans.

In politics and Life, when other people are not talented or very smart - and are also jealous they can't control you - the next step is to proceed to character assassination. Now the conservative Republican talk radio guys are blasting the air waves that Kagan is supposedly gay. She has never married, so, according to their vicious minds, she must also be gay. Not one of those Republicans ever claimed to be critical thinkers or speakers of the truth. Question: Have any of them actually asked her if she was gay? Of course not.

The truth is for any attorney to fast track their career like Kagan has hers at such a young age they work outrageous hours to the tune of 100 or more a week. They wear out their health. If they have relationships they often lose them or end up in divorce. If they are looking for relationships there is no time to pursue them.

Calling her a homosexual is the usual cheap shot from the so-called Moral Majority Republicans. Like they lead upstanding lives. Rush Limbaugh is a known drug addict, liar and over five times married. And anyone takes his word to be truth for anything? The Republicans, conservatives, churchy Moral Majority have enough dirt in their own collective glass houses.

Senator Craig, still in office, goes cruising for five minutes sexual trysts with other men in airport restrooms - and he's too cowardly to tell his wife the truth about himself. Then there are those conservative crusading anti-gay homophobic Protestant ministers, like George Rekers, who are caught, literally, with their pants down consorting with male prostitutes they rented to "carry their luggage."

The political logic goes that if you have any honest decent and intelligent person up for any appointment by the Democrats then by all means lie and muddy the waters to confuse people about them. The truth is the public is no longer fooled or confused about the Republican dirty political tactics or claims of taking care of the middle class.

Republicans claim to be diverse yet deny a woman a seat on the Supreme Court. They send out their White Supremacist bloggers to lie about her some more on the web to stir up racist sentiment. The latest garbage coming out of that idiot sphere is there is some huge Jewish conspiracy to put her on the Supreme Court and deny white people their rights. Where do they get this perverted thinking??? When our government and societal leaders are willing to lie rather than speak the truth then their minds have descended into depravity and can no longer be trusted to make wise decisions for the public.

Listed here are both the pro and con cartoonists about Kagan's nomination. Notice how the Republican cartoonists draw Obama as a clown and Kagan as a butch gay. While cartooning at its heart is about exaggeration, the technique is usually combined with truth. It can also be used as subtle visual propaganda in the unscrupulous hands. Take a look and decide for yourself.
