Music: Rapper Talib Kweli Performs Cold Rain, Get By on Colbert

From Denny: This rapper is known for his socially conscious lyrics. He addressed the Arizona law that racially profiles anyone of color, predominantly Hispanic. As a Social Issues Poet (SIP) myself I consider this musician a SIP+ since he rap-sings his poetry. :)

What I like about this group is they have created a more musically and mentally interesting version of hip hop and rap by adding the jazz vibe that winds through the music tying it all together.

Another great way to balance the tension of the spoken rapped word is he has included a melodic female singer for that yin-yang perfect balance. Too often much of hip hop is lacking in musical creativity, has too harsh a sound that does not engage as much of the brain as does Talib's music.

When you listen to the distinctive parts all pulled together it literally fires off different places in your brain a lot like classical music does. Well done!

Some hip hop and rap is too local in scope or sometimes too crude for mainstream audiences. It reminds me of when poets tried too much to be as vague and obtuse as possible, proving their intellectual superiority in a previous generation. It left their audiences frustrated and scratching their heads wondering what the hell the poet was discussing. Fortunately, a generation later most poets speak plainly as to their intent.

I'm glad to see this trend of musicians delivering some quality music along with a thinking person's lyrics that give the listener something deep to consider long after the song is finished. To my friends in Italy, if you haven't heard of this hip hop rapping jazz sensational group, sit back, listen and enjoy!
